When the issuer's travel portal is worth it
The Strata Elite pays 12x on hotels, car rental and more booked through its issuer's portal and 1.5x booked directly — a difference of $19.95 per $100 spent. That is a real gap, and it is not free.
Cardful never ranks a card on a portal rate. Most people will not reroute a booking through an issuer's travel site, and a ranking built on the assumption that they will is a ranking that recommends a card for a purchase it will not earn that much on. The portal rate is surfaced separately instead, as "more if booked through the portal".

What the portal rate costs
Elite credit. A hotel stay booked through a third party usually earns no points in the hotel's own programme, no elite night credit and no status benefits. For anybody holding status, that is often worth more than the extra points on the card.
Changeability. Cancellations, schedule changes and irregular operations are handled by the portal, not the airline or the hotel — which is the difference between a phone call to the party that owns your reservation and a phone call to a party that has to contact them.
The price. The portal is a travel agency, and its price is not always the price on the airline's own site. A bonus on a higher fare is not a bonus.
When it is clearly worth it
A flight on an airline you have no status with, at the same fare, is the clean case: there is very little to give up and the gap in the table above is real money. Cards whose portal rate is enormous relative to their direct rate are where to look first — those are the rows at the top of that table, which is why it is sorted that way.
The extension makes the same distinction on screen. A rule that only pays through a portal never sets the headline rate, and it names the portal it needs — Chase Travel, Amex Travel, Citi Travel, Capital One Travel — rather than implying a card earns more than it does.
